If your dog is frequently itching, scooting, producing soft stools, or just seems a little off more often than you'd expect, you might have spent time googling allergies, diet advice, or the latest supplement trends.
You're not wrong to look. But the answer may not lie in any single trigger. There may be something more fundamental going on, something that vets are increasingly paying attention to but that rarely gets explained clearly to dog owners.
The concept is low-grade, chronic inflammation. Or, as researchers sometimes refer to it, a proinflammatory state.
This article explains what that means, why it matters, and what the evidence suggests about supporting it.
Inflammation is not always a bad thing
Let's start with something that often surprises people: inflammation, in itself, is a normal and useful process.
When your dog cuts a paw, eats something they shouldn't, or picks up an infection, their immune system mounts an inflammatory response. White blood cells are mobilised. Tissue is repaired. The problem is addressed. The inflammation resolves.
This is acute inflammation, and it's a sign that the immune system is working as it should.
The problem arises when inflammation doesn't fully resolve — when the immune system remains in a low-level state of activation, not responding to a specific threat but quietly simmering in the background. This is sometimes described as a proinflammatory state, and it looks quite different from the acute kind.
What does a proinflammatory state look like in dogs?
This is where it gets clinically interesting, because the signs can be easy to miss or attribute to other things.
A dog in a low-grade proinflammatory state might show:
- Persistent or recurrent skin irritation: itching, redness, or inflammation that keeps coming back
- Loose or variable stools that never quite settle
- Intermittent scooting or anal gland issues
- A coat that looks dull or feels poor in texture
- Low energy or a dog that seems less resilient than they used to
- Occasional vomiting or digestive sensitivity without a clear cause
None of these signs on their own necessarily points to chronic inflammation. But when several appear together, or when they recur repeatedly without a satisfying explanation, it's worth asking a broader question about what might be driving them.
Where does the gut come in?
One of the most significant shifts in veterinary and human medicine over the past decade is the recognition that the gut is a central player in immune regulation, not just digestion.
Approximately 70% of the body's immune tissue is located in or around the gastrointestinal tract. The gut wall acts as a physical and immunological barrier, separating the contents of the intestine from the rest of the body. When that barrier is functioning well, it allows nutrients through and keeps unwanted material out. When it's compromised, it can contribute to a state of background immune activation.
The gut microbiome, which is the vast community of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms living in your dog's digestive tract, plays a central role in how well that barrier holds.
A microbiome with good diversity and balance tends to support normal immune function and gut barrier integrity. A microbiome that's disrupted through diet, stress, antibiotics, or other factors may contribute to a less stable gut environment, which can in turn influence the immune system's baseline activity.
Current understanding suggests this gut-immune connection may be relevant to a wider range of signs than was previously appreciated, including some of the skin and digestive presentations that dog owners find frustrating to resolve.
What disrupts the microbiome?
Several things are known to influence the composition and stability of the canine gut microbiome.
Diet is probably the most significant. Highly processed diets, diets low in fermentable fibre, and frequent dietary changes can all affect which bacteria thrive in the gut. The resident microbial community depends on certain substrates, particularly prebiotic fibres, to maintain itself. When those aren't consistently available, the balance can shift.
Antibiotics are often necessary and lifesaving, but they can cause significant disruption to the microbiome, sometimes for weeks or months after a course ends. This doesn't mean antibiotics should be avoided when needed — it means the period following antibiotic use is one where gut support may be particularly relevant.
Stress is increasingly recognised as a factor, both in humans and animals. Changes in environment, routine, or social situation can influence the gut-brain axis and, through it, the gut microbiome.
Early life factors also matter. Dogs that didn't receive normal microbial colonisation in early life — through caesarean birth, very early weaning, or restricted social environments — may carry a less diverse microbiome into adulthood.
None of these factors alone necessarily causes a proinflammatory state. But in combination, over time, they may contribute to a gut environment that is less well equipped to maintain normal immune regulation.
What the research suggests
This is an area of active investigation, and it's worth being clear about the current state of evidence.
Studies in dogs have shown that the composition of the gut microbiome differs meaningfully between healthy dogs and those with chronic inflammatory conditions — including inflammatory bowel conditions and certain skin disorders. A review published in Animal Frontiers discusses how the gut microbiome influences immune activity and wider aspects of companion animal health.
What the research does not yet fully establish is the precise direction of causation: whether disrupted microbiome composition causes the inflammatory state, results from it, or both. This is an important distinction, and one that honest science acknowledges.
What can be said is that gut health and immune regulation appear to be closely connected, and that supporting the gut microbiome is a reasonable and evidence-informed approach to consider alongside appropriate veterinary care.
What can be done to support it?
If you're concerned about your dog's health, the first step is always a conversation with your own vet. Recurring skin issues, digestive instability, or changes in energy or coat quality should be assessed properly — there are many potential causes, and some require specific treatment.
Beyond that, there are evidence-informed things that can support the gut environment over time.
Dietary consistency matters more than many owners realise. Frequent changes in food can destabilise the microbiome. If switching diets, doing so gradually gives the gut a better chance to adjust.
Prebiotic fibre feeds the resident bacteria that support gut balance. Sources include inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS). These are found in some whole foods and in certain supplements.
Probiotic supplementation introduces selected live bacterial strains. Evidence in dogs is accumulating, particularly around stress-related digestive changes and post-antibiotic recovery.
Postbiotics, the beneficial compounds produced by bacterial activity, are an emerging area of interest for gut support, offering a stable option that doesn't rely on live organisms surviving through to the gut.
The aim of supporting the gut environment is not to treat inflammation directly. These are nutritional approaches, not medicines, and the goal is to help maintain the conditions in which normal immune regulation can operate.
